چکیده

Previous work [51] showed how to solve time-fractional diffusion equations by particle tracking. This paper extends the method to the case where the order of the fractional time derivative is greater than one. A subordination approach treats the fractional time derivative as a random time change of the corresponding Cauchy problem, with a first derivative in time. One novel feature of the time fractional case of order greater than one is the appearance of clustering in the operational time subordinator, which is non-Markovian. Solutions to the time-fractional equation are probability densities of the underlying stochastic process. The process models movement of individual particles. The evolution of an individual particle in both space and time are captured in a pair of stochastic differential equations, or Langevin equations. Monte Carlo simulation yields particle location, and the ensemble density approximates the solution to the variable coefficient time-fractional diffusion equation in one or several spatial dimensions. The particle tracking code is validated against inverse transform solutions in the simplest cases. Further applications solve model equations for fracture flow, and upscaling flow in complex heterogeneous porous media. These variable coefficient time-fractional partial differential equations in several dimensions are not amenable to solution by any alternative method, so that the grid-free particle tracking approach presented here is uniquely appropriate.

Particle tracking for time-fractional diffusion.

A particle tracking code is developed to solve a general time-fractional diffusion equation (FDE), yielding a Lagrangian framework that can track particle dynamics. Extensive simulations demonstrate the efficiency and flexibility of this simple Langevin approach. Many real problems require a vector FDE with variable parameters and multiscaling spreading rates. For these problems, particle track...

An Implicit Difference-ADI Method for the Two-dimensional Space-time Fractional Diffusion Equation

Fractional order diffusion equations are generalizations of classical diffusion equations which are used to model in physics, finance, engineering, etc. In this paper we present an implicit difference approximation by using the alternating directions implicit (ADI) approach to solve the two-dimensional space-time fractional diffusion equation (2DSTFDE) on a finite domain. Consistency, unconditi...

Finite integration method with RBFs for solving time-fractional convection-diffusion equation with variable coefficients

In this paper, a modification of finite integration method (FIM) is combined with the radial basis function (RBF) method to solve a time-fractional convection-diffusion equation with variable coefficients. The FIM transforms partial differential equations into integral equations and this creates some constants of integration. Unlike the usual FIM, the proposed method computes constants of integ...

A New Implicit Finite Difference Method for Solving Time Fractional Diffusion Equation

In this paper, a time fractional diffusion equation on a finite domain is con- sidered. The time fractional diffusion equation is obtained from the standard diffusion equation by replacing the first order time derivative by a fractional derivative of order 0 < a< 1 (in the Riemann-Liovill or Caputo sence). In equation that we consider the time fractional derivative is in...

Numerical Investigations of Mixing in Physically Heterogeneous Porous Media using the One- and Two-Particle Covariance

Several works have pointed out that local dispersion plays a crucial role in determining the behavior of the concentration variance and coef¿cient of variation over time for conservative tracers. Numerical investigations aimed at evaluating the effect of the local dispersivity on dilution time scales are performed using a random-walk particle-tracking method model applied to transport of conser...
